What it is
The how-it-works page at agentency.com/how-it-works is a five-step walkthrough of the working loop: build a chatbot, test it privately, put it live, hand the hard cases to a person, and turn the questions it missed into new knowledge.
It is a narrative page, not a procedure. Each step is illustrated with a mock-up of the screen you would be on, and the whole story scrolls as one piece. Nobody has to sign in to read it.
When you would use it
Read it before you sign up, when you want to know what the work will actually feel like rather than what the product contains. It answers "how much of this is on me?" better than the features page does.
It is also the right link to send a colleague who has been asked to approve the project and wants to understand the effort, not the feature list.
Once you have an account, stop using it as a guide. The steps here are illustrations; the real, clickable version of the same journey is the Getting started category of this Help Center.
Where to find it
Open How it works in the top navigation of the public site, or go to the how-it-works page. It is also linked from the Product column of the footer and from the second button in most page heroes.
What you will see
- A hero with the page's promise and two buttons — begin setup, or ask us about integration.
- The scroll story, the heart of the page. Five numbered steps, each with a short description, a tag, and an animated frame showing the matching screen:
- Build your chatbot — pick a template, write the welcome message, add knowledge, switch on a channel.
- Test replies before anyone sees them — chat with it in a private preview and fix weak answers by fixing the knowledge behind them.
- Go live — it answers from the products, prices, and policies you approved, in the customer's own language.
- Hand off the hard cases — when a request is sensitive or the chatbot is unsure, it stops and emails your team with the reason and the full conversation.
- Improve from real conversations — review conversations, find the questions that went unanswered, and save the right answer.
- A call-to-action band and a frequently asked questions block covering setup time, technical skill, languages, data, cancelling, and website or store compatibility.
How this maps to real steps
The five steps on the marketing page correspond to real articles here:
| Marketing step | Start here |
|---|---|
| Build your chatbot | Create your account, then the Chatbots category |
| Test privately | The Getting started category — try the test drawer before going live |
| Go live | The Web widget and Channels categories |
| Hand off | The Conversations category |
| Improve | The Knowledge base and Analytics categories |
Limits and plan notes
The page shows the loop, not your allowances. How many chatbots you may run, how much knowledge you may store, and how many replies you may send are plan questions — see the pricing page and Message credits.
The claim that setup takes minutes is honest about the mechanics and optimistic about the outcome. Creating a chatbot really is a few clicks. Making it genuinely good at your business takes a focused session of cleaning up knowledge and testing answers, which the page's own frequently asked questions say too.
Common problems
The animation does not play or the steps look static.
The scroll story respects your operating system's reduced-motion setting. If you have asked your device to reduce motion, the frames are shown without animation on purpose, and all the text is still there.
I followed the five steps and my chatbot answers "I don't know".
That is the design working, not a fault: it declines rather than inventing an answer. It means retrieval found nothing relevant in your knowledge. Add the missing source and test again — the Knowledge base and Troubleshooting categories cover this in detail.
Common questions
Can I follow the five steps as instructions?
They are illustrations, not clickable steps. Use them to understand the shape of the work, then follow the Getting started category here for the real screens and paths.
Is setup really only a few minutes?
Creating a chatbot is. Making it genuinely good at your business — clean knowledge and tested answers — usually takes a focused session, which the page's own FAQ says too.
Why does the scroll animation not play for me?
The page respects your device's reduced-motion setting. If you have asked your system to reduce motion, the frames render without animation on purpose and no content is lost.
