Dark mode and theme
Switch the dashboard between Light and Dark. Your choice is saved to your account and follows you across devices.

What it is
Agentency has two themes: Light and Dark. You pick one, and it applies to the whole signed-in dashboard — sidebar, tables, drawers, charts, and forms.
The choice is saved to your account rather than to the browser, so it follows you to your laptop, your phone, and any other device you sign in from.
Two things it is not
It is not your chatbot's appearance. The theme here changes what you see while working. What your visitors see on the chat widget or the hosted page is set separately, per chatbot, under that chatbot's appearance settings. Switching yourself to dark mode does nothing to the widget on your website.
It does not follow your operating system. Agentency deliberately ignores the system-level "dark mode" preference on your phone or computer. If you have never made a choice, you get Light — every time, on every device.
That surprises people who expect a "System" option, so it is worth explaining. Matching the operating system means the server has to guess what the browser is about to do, and it guesses wrong for the first fraction of a second: the page paints in one theme and then jumps to the other. Always starting in Light removes that flash entirely. The cost is one deliberate click from anyone who wants dark; the benefit is that nobody ever sees the page flicker.
When you would use it
- You work in the evening or in a dim room and the light theme is too bright.
- You prefer dark interfaces generally.
- You are on a new device and it has reverted to Light before your saved choice caught up.
- You are taking screenshots and want them consistent.
Where to find it
Open Dashboard → Settings → Appearance.
The theme picker is the first card on that page, headed Theme, with the hint "Always starts in light. Your choice is saved to your account and follows you across devices."
There is a second, quicker route on the public side of the site: the marketing pages, the sign-in screens, and the "page not found" screen all carry a small sun/moon toggle in the header. It changes the same setting.
Steps
- Open Dashboard → Settings → Appearance.
- In the Theme card, choose Light or Dark. Each option shows a small colour preview.
- The screen switches immediately — there is no separate Save button for this.
- That is it. The choice is written to your account in the background.
- To confirm it saved, sign in on another device; the dashboard should come up in the theme you picked.
Keyboard users: the two options are a radio group. Tab to it, use the arrow keys to move between Light and Dark, and the choice applies as you move.
What you will see
The Theme card shows two large, selectable tiles with a colour swatch, an icon (a sun for light, a moon for dark), and a label. The active one is outlined in your accent colour.
The switch itself is instantaneous and does not animate every coloured element independently — transitions are suppressed for the moment of the change, so it reads as a clean cut rather than a wave of colour.
Below the Theme card on the same page are language, timezone, and time format. Those have their own Save button; the theme does not. See Appearance, language, and timezone.
How it follows you between devices
Your theme is stored in two places at once, and knowing which is which explains every odd moment you might notice:
- On this device, so the page can paint in the correct theme immediately on load, before any data has been fetched. This is what makes the dashboard come up dark rather than flashing white first.
- On your account, which is the real record and the reason the choice travels.
On a brand-new device the local copy does not exist yet, so the page opens in Light. A moment later your account details arrive, your saved choice is recognised, and the theme switches. From then on that device remembers, and later visits open straight into the right theme with no switch.
One deliberate rule sits on top of this: if you toggle the theme on the new device before your saved choice arrives, your fresh toggle wins. The system will not overrule a choice you just made with an older one from the server.
Limits and plan notes
- Theme is available on every plan, including Free. It is not a paid feature.
- There are exactly two options. There is no System, no auto-by-time-of-day, and no custom colour scheme for the dashboard.
- The setting belongs to you, not to a workspace. Switching into a colleague's workspace does not change your theme, and your theme is invisible to them. See The Accounts list.
- Your dashboard theme has no effect on the hosted chatbot page or the website widget, which follow their own per-chatbot appearance settings.
- The public Help Center and marketing pages follow the same toggle when you are signed out, stored on that device only.
Common problems
Dark mode did not stick after I signed in somewhere else.
Give it a second on first load — a new device opens in Light and adopts your saved choice once your account details arrive. If it is still Light after a reload, the save may have failed at the time you set it; open Appearance and pick Dark again.
I saw an error saying the theme could not be saved.
The screen switched but the save did not reach the server, so the picker reverts to where it was. That is intentional — it would be worse to show you dark mode while your account still says light. Check your connection and choose again.
Where is the System option?
There is not one, by design. See the explanation above. Pick the theme you want and it stays on every device.
Part of the page still looks light in dark mode.
Report it with the page name. Content you supplied — an uploaded image, a logo with a white background, a PDF preview — will not adapt, and that is expected.
My visitors are seeing dark mode and I did not ask for that.
Your dashboard theme is not involved. Check that chatbot's own appearance settings.
The toggle on the marketing site does not match my dashboard.
Signed out, the toggle is remembered on that device only, because there is no account to save it to. Once you sign in, your account's choice takes over.
Common questions
Why is there no System option?
Matching the operating system makes the page paint in one theme and jump to the other. Always starting in Light removes that flash for the cost of one click.
Does dark mode change what my visitors see?
No. This is your dashboard only. The widget and hosted page follow their own per-chatbot appearance settings.
Why did a new device open in light mode?
A fresh device has no local copy of your choice yet, so it opens in Light and switches once your account details arrive. It remembers from then on.
Is there a quicker toggle than the settings page?
Yes. The marketing pages, sign-in screens, and the page-not-found screen carry a sun/moon toggle in the header that changes the same setting.
